To the delight of anyone who had ever forgotten to replace their fuel cap, Ford introduced its capless fuel system in July 2007.
Debuting on the 2008 Explorer, Easy Fuel eliminated the potential for the gas station folly using a spring-loaded flapper door held shut by latches.
Because the system can only be opened using a standard-sized fuel nozzle, the market-first equipment can also act as a theft deterrent.
The system features a misfuel inhibitor which prevents the wrong type of fuel nozzle - or even a garden hose or siphon pump – from entering the fuel system.
Once fueling is complete, the system automatically reseals, offering a tighter seal than a traditional fuel cap.
