Range Rover Sport: The best SUV on the planet?

Imagine walking into Land Rover HQ thirty years ago, and asking them to build a luxury model that costs up to £100,000. They’d have laughed you out of the room. Land Rover isn’t a name we associate with high-end luxury and elegance. We love the company for its off-road legacy and its military green uniform. Yet, here we are in 2016 with Land Rover coming out on top for luxury and refinement. The Range Rover Sport is perhaps the best example of high-end driving on the market. And it’s a 4x4! Let’s see what’s going on here.

Rivals

First of all, let’s take a look at what cars are lining up against the Range Rover Sport. Of course, there’s its older and bigger brother, the Range Rover. It’s £15,000 more expensive, and comes with a lot more space and practicality. Arguably, the Sport version is much more stylish. Lining up on the other side is the Audi Q7, a formidable vehicle with good looks, and a decent record off road. The Mercedes-Benz GLE is another fierce rival, but it’s the Porsche Cayenne that scares Land Rover the most. It looks gorgeous, and it’s more fun to drive than the Range Rover.

Cost

Let’s talk about that price tag, because it is enormous. After playing with the Range Rover for a day, i must say, it’s worth every penny. Remember, you can always purchase this car on finance at Hunters Land Rover. So, you can spread the cost somewhat. If you’re looking to save money at the pumps, you can opt for the hybrid model. It delivers a very respectable mileage indeed.

Engine performance

Land Rover have never been one to shy away from a big engine, and the Range Rover Sport is no different. It comes with Land Rover’s classic eight-speed gearbox, which is fluid and a joy to use. The standard engine is a 5.0-liter V8, but (as you can guess) it is anything but "standard". It’s phenomenal. Put your foot down, and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in an Aston Martin. It will do 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, which is staggering when you consider its size and weight. As for handling, its lighter than its predecessor, making it smooth and responsive.

Off-road performance

This wouldn’t be a Land Rover test if we didn’t see how it fared on tricky terrain. Luckily, the Range Rover Sport isn’t about to let us down. The car will eat up pretty much anything you can throw at it. It will ford rivers and climb mountains before it gives up on you. It has off-roading mod cons, and it will tow up to 3,500 kg.

Interior

Finally, let’s talk about the interior, because it’s just beautiful. With this car, Land Rover have created a model that competes with the most luxurious on the market. You’ll find stunning leather and a modern digital dashboard. Meanwhile, the drive is smooth and quiet.

With the Range Rover Sport, Land Rover have balanced the best of both worlds. It is high-performance, luxury, and off-roading excellence all rolled into one. It’s no stretch to say it’s the best SUV on the planet.
