Peugeot rising: The French carmaker is back with a bang

The past few years have spelled a catalogue of disasters for French car brand Peugeot. Sales have been slow, its reputation has taken a nosedive, and its designs have failed to dazzle.

Yet with a new year ahead, it looks as though the manufacturer’s fortunes are about to revive. The brand’s freshly released 308 GTi is proving itself to be one of the hottest cars on the market, and it seems that the auto leviathan might be coming back with a bang.

Peugeot 308 GTi

The hottest hatchback around

Peugeot has long been renowned for its exquisitely designed hatchbacks, and the 308 GTi looks like it marks a return to form for the French car brand.

The new model symbolises a welcome embracing of what Peugeot does best, being the first family hatchback that the firm has retailed since 2000.

Aptly released on Bonfire Night, its sales have so far proven to be as explosive as the fireworks that greeted its birth.

Its introduction onto the market follows on the back of another return to form, in the shape of 2013's 208 GTi, which has so far enjoyed strong sales.

An eye-catching design

Unsurprisingly, the new Peugeot is already managing to turn heads, thanks to its sleek and sporty aesthetic. With 19-inch alloy wheels, and optional red and black paintwork, it’s hard to miss as it speeds through the urban jungle and roars down Britain’s motorways.

Gratifyingly, it has the performance to match, and experts like Robins and Day report that the more powerful version can charge from 0 to 60 mph in just six seconds, with an impressive top speed of 155mph.

Beneath the bonnet, it also manages to please even the pickiest petrol head, with a replica of the impressive engine used in the RCZ R Coupe. A 1.6-liter turbocharged monster, it has a power output of 270 hp - a figure not to be sniffed at when you consider its capacity.

Its list of plus points doesn’t stop there. Weighing in at just 1,205 kg, the 308 GTi has the best power to weight ratio in its class, which should recommend it to every auto enthusiast on the scene.

Providing a smooth drive, exceptional handling, and chic styling to top off its many plus points, the 308 GTi inarguably marks a return to form for one of France’s best loved automakers, and it deserves a place in the garage of any driver capable of recognising true motoring brilliance.
