With an increasing number of people living in urban environments, compact vans are becoming more and more popular amongst small business owners living in built-up cities. Not only are they perfect for making short deliveries of light loads, but they’re also much more economical to run than typical panel vans. There’s a lot of competition in the market right now so we narrowed down some of the best choices.
Volkswagen Caddy
Volkswagen Caddy
Volkswagen has a long history in the compact van market. It’s line of Caddy vehicles was first introduced in 1978 and the company continued to produce the first generation since as late as 2003. We’re now into the fourth generation, and the Caddy still remains a popular choice amongst buyers. The latest range uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine with performance spanning a modest 73 hp all the way up to a speedy 148 hp. The mid-range 101 hp model is the best choice for most users, with an impressive 70 mpg thanks to the firm’s efficiency-focused BlueMotion technology.
Renault Kangoo
The Renault Kangoo is another one of the most popular vehicles in the compact van market. The standard model comes with a load volume of three cubic metres and the 1.5 dCi diesel engine is available in three different models: the 75 hp and 90 hp models are both fitted with a five-speed manual transmission, but there’s also a 110 hp model known as the Kangoo Sport that comes with a six-speed box. There’s also a 105 hp petrol alternative, but those looking for the most bang for their buck would be advised to choose the former. With the diesel variations, you can expect up to 60 mpg, which puts the Kangoo up there with some of the best in its class.
Ford Transit Connect
The Ford Transit Connect appropriately carries the firm’s high reputation in creating great, all-round vehicles in various different categories. In fact, a smaller Transit Courier model was introduced into the company’s lineup last year. For most businesses, though, the Connect will likely be the best option. While it’s load volume is just shy of the Kangoo at 2.8 cubic metres, where it comes out on top over its rival is through the inclusion of a multitude of safety options that came fitted as standard. The 1.6-liter TDCi diesel engine model also features a competitive mpg of between 60-70 mpg.
Whichever of these vehicles you end up choosing, you can be sure you'll have a great van at your disposal. Take a look here to see some of your options and see what suits your company's criteria the best.
