The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe has officially gone into production at the company's plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Designed to compete with the BMW X6, the GLE Coupe is billed as a striking combination of a coupe and a crossover. It has a dynamic roofline and a distinctive rear end that echoes the S-Class Coupe.
Meanwhile, the cabin comes with sport seats, a sport steering wheel and a new infotainment display. There's also silver shadow accents and aluminum or wood trim.
Under the hood, a variety of engines will be available including:
- A 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 258 hp and 620 Nm of torque
- A twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 333 hp and 480 Nm of torque
- A twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 367 hp and 520 Nm of torque
- A twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with 557 hp and 700 Nm of torque
- A twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with 585 hp and 760 Nm of torque
Markus Schafer, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The production launch of the GLE Coupe is an important milestone in our growth strategy. In 2015, we will renew almost our full SUV portfolio and have therefore built up our capacities in the U.S. Together with the C‑Class, we will produce more than 300,000 vehicles in Tuscaloosa this year."
