GM President Dan Ammann has announced the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will offer an estimated fuel economy rating of 48 mpg city / 45 mpg highway / 47 mpg combined, unsurpassed in its segment.
Set to go on sale in spring 2016, the Malibu Hybrid features an all-new direct-injection 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a two-motor drive unit slightly modified from the Chevrolet Volt drive unit. This setup allows the model to produce a combined maximum output of 182 hp.
The Malibu Hybrid is also equipped with an 80-cell, 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which can power it at up to 55 mph on electricity alone. The gasoline-powered engine will automatically come on at higher speeds and high loads when necessary to provide additional power.
