Volkswagen has just announced plans to offer the production version of the Golf Sportwagen concept in the United States early next year.

Based on the new MQB modular architecture, the Golf Sportwagen is 1.1-inch longer, 0.7-inch wider and 0.9-inch lower than the outgoing Jetta Sportwagen. It comes with a number of new features including Bi-Xenon headlights, Park Distance Control and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. There's also a panoramic sunroof, 12-way power driver's seat and a Climatronic automatic climate control system.

Under the hood, two different engines will be available. The turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder petrol develops 170 hp and 270 Nm of torque, while the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine produces 150 hp and 319 Nm of torque. The petrol engine can be mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel can be connected to a six-speed manual or a DSG dual-clutch gearbox.
