BMW has recently announced plans to offer an X5 plug-in hybrid, which could be called the X5 eDrive when it goes on sale.

Previewed by the Concept X5 eDrive debuted last year in Frankfurt, the prototype has an a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and an xDrive all-wheel drive system. According to the German carmaker, the engine and electric motor operating in tandem can be split in a variable ratio between the front and rear wheels. The split is automatically controlled to provide superior traction, optimal stability and highest standards of agility and performance under all conditions.

This allows the crossover to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 7 seconds and average approximately 3.8 L/100km (61.9 mpg US or 74.3 mpg UK) in the EU test cycle, with CO2 emissions of 90 g/km. More importantly, the car is capable of all-electric operation for up to 30 km (18.6 miles), in which mode its produces no emissions at all at the point of use.
