Volkswagen has recently unveiled the Passat BlueMotion concept at the 2014 North American International Auto Show.
Designed to show how fuel efficient non-hybrids can be, the concept features a Reef Blue Metallic exterior with a revised grille and a rear spoiler. The model also has a two-tone interior with leather seats, carbon fiber trim and gloss black accents.
Power is provided by a 1.4-liter TSI engine which produces 150 hp and 249 Nm of torque. The engine has been equipped with direct injection, a start/stop system and an Active Cylinder Management system that deactivates two cylinders at low speeds.
It also has a coasting function which increases fuel efficiency when the driver releases the accelerator pedal, as the DSG transmission decouples the engine, allowing the car to roll with the lowest possible mechanical drag from the other moving components.
Thanks to these modifications, the Passat BlueMotion concept delivers an estimated highway fuel economy rating of 5.6 L/100km (42 mpg US or 50.4 mpg UK).
