After its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe concept will be showcased at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show tomorrow.

Based on the new MQB architecture, the CrossBlue Coupe concept has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a turbocharged direct-injection V6 gasoline engine and two electric motors to produce a combined 415 hp. This allows the SUV to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in just 5.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 237 km/h.

Despite its impressive performance, Volkswagen rates the combined fuel consumption of the CrossBlue Coupe at 3.36 l/100 km, with the driving range in hybrid mode estimated at around 917 km. It has an all-electric driving range of up to 21 km at a maximum speed of 121 km/h.

Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, said: "The disproportionate growth in the SUV segment gives designers the opportunity to implement an even greater diversification of models. The CrossBlue Coupe shows the potential of our Volkswagen design DNA and will undoubtedly have an influence on future SUV models."
