Mercedes-Benz has just introduced two new eco-friendly variants of the E-Class.
First up, the E 200 Natural Gas Drive (NGD) is powered by a new bi-fuel four-cylinder engine which produces 156 hp and 270 Nm of torque. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 220 km/h.
When running on petrol, it averages 6.3-liter / 100 km (37.3 mpg US or 44.8 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 147 g/km. On natural gas, it consumes 4.3 kg / 100 km, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 116 g/km. Using natural gas is also noticeably kinder to your pocket, reducing fuel bills by more 50 percent in comparison to running on petrol. If you drive 20,000 km a year, this saves you more than €1,000 a year in Germany.
The E 220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, on the other hand, uses a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine which creates 170 hp and 400 Nm of torque. It enables the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 227 km/h.
To improve the car's efficiency, the German carmaker added an engine start/stop system and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission that has been optimised with respect to driving comfort and consumption.
Other fine tuning includes low-resistance tires on 16- or 17-inch wheels, a 15 mm reduced ride height and a radiator blind that directs the flow of air as required and thus improves aerodynamics. Thanks to these modifications, the model returns 4.4-liter / 100 km (53.4 mpg US or 64.2 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of 114 g/km, beating all other cars in its segment.
The E 220 BlueTEC BlueEFFICIENCY Edition will be launched in September and pricing starts at €47,272.75, while the E 200 NGD will be available from December for €47,808.25 (all prices including VAT).
