BMW has officially announced plans to introduce the i8 at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Described as a contemporary sports car perfect for everyday driving, the i8 combines the performance of a sports car with the consumption of a small car. It will be shown alongside the i3.

Under the hood, the i8 is expected to be powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor which creates a total output of 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This could allow the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 5 seconds, return less than 3-liter / 100 km (78.4 mpg US or 94.1 mpg UK) and travel up to 35 km on electricity alone.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German carmaker will also introduce the 4-Series Coupe, the 2014 X5 and the Active Tourer Outdoor concept. Visitors will be able to experience the endless driving pleasure of the new BMW models on an almost 300 meters long track over three levels.
