Following a leak yesterday, Bentley has officially unveiled the 2014 Flying Spur, ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5.
Designed to set a new luxury performance sedan benchmark, the new Flying Spur has a completely different design from the previous generation, along with some of the styling cues seen on the Continental GT and Mulsanne. Notable highlights include LED-infused headlights, a lower roof line, ventilated front fenders, a more upright chrome grille and 19- to 21-inch alloy wheels.
Underneath the elegant skin is a wide range of materials which is applied in an intelligent and efficient manner. Designed to improve overall body stiffness and refinement whilst meeting stringent crash performance targets and pedestrian protection legislation, the new body structure includes reinforcement to the B-posts, sills and front crossmembers together with deformable components in the floorpan for optimal load transfer.
The bonnet and front fenders are constructed from aluminum, with the fenders shaped using the aerospace-industry super forming technique, it's now 50 kg lighter than the predecessor.
The sumptuous interior includes 600 new parts, with only the sun visors, grab handles, armrests and some of the front console and controls carried over from the previous generation. Class-leading entertainment and information technologies are married with traditional hand-crafted materials and stunning contemporary design to create the ultimate high-luxury sedan cabin.
Rear passengers wishing to work on the move may order the new Multi-Media Specification which allows portable devices, laptops and tablet computers to connect to the internet through the car's own Wi-Fi hotspot with an active SIM and includes 64 GB of internal storage capacity. Two 10-inch LCD displays are installed to the backs of the front seats, while top-loading multimedia players sit in pockets fitted beneath, allowing the user to load and enjoy video, photo and music content from DVDs, SD cards, USB devices including iPods and iPads, and HDMI devices.
To control all toys, the British carmaker offers a "Touch Screen Remote" which allows rear-cabin occupants to control an extensive range of features from the comfort of their seat.
In addition, customers wishing to extend the range of available options further can choose the Mulliner Driving Specification which adds diamond quilted seats, a leather headliner, alloy foot pedals, a knurled gear lever, a jewel filler cap and 21-inch two-piece five-spoke alloy wheels.
At launch, the 2014 Flying Spur will be powered by a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine which develops 625 hp and 800 Nm of torque. It is linked to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system, which allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 322 km/h. In terms of efficiency, it returns 14.7-liter per 100 km (19.2 mpg UK or 15 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 343 g/km.
