BMW is recalling 30,265 units of the 2007-2010 X5 in the United States due to a potential problem with the brakes system. According to the German carmaker, the affected vehicles were manufactured September 12, 2006 through March 18, 2010 and equipped with an 8-cylinder engine.

"The brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the hose," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "The contamination could result in a loss of power assist braking. The loss of power assist in braking could increase stopping distance and lead to a vehicle crash."

The recall is expected to begin sometime this month and dealers will replace the brake vacuum line with one that contains a check valve, free of charge. Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
