2013 Ford Escape and Fusion recalled over engine fire risk

Ford is recalling 89,153 models equipped with the 1.6-liter engine for a possible fire hazard. The affected vehicles include 73,320 2013 Escapes and 15,833 2013 Fusions in the United States and Canada.

This is the fourth time the 2013 Escape has been recalled and this is the third time the recall has involved the 1.6-liter engine. More than a dozen fires have been reported in the Escape, but thankfully so far no injuries have been linked to the new problem.

The problem stems from reports that the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine can overheat and catch fire. Drivers say that the notices "Engine Power Reduced To Lower Temp" or "Engine Over Temp, Stop Safely" have appeared in their instrument cluster, and may sound a chime and illuminate a red light.

The North American carmaker is currently working on a repair procedure and will notify owners as soon as a fix is found.

"We have identified an issue and are taking actions in the best interest of our customers," said Steve Kenner, director of Ford's automotive safety office. "It is important that affected customers not ignore this recall and contact their dealer as soon as possible. While we recognize the inconvenience recalls cause our customers, we are taking these actions on their behalf to help ensure their safety."

U.S. owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332 and Canadian customers can call 888-222-7814.
