2009-2012 BMW X5 Diesel recalled for steering failure

2011 BMW X5

BMW is recalling 29,800 X5 xDrive35d models with diesel engines in the United States because of a problem with the power assisted steering. The affected vehicles were produced between September 01, 2008 through November 15, 2012.

"The engine belt idler pulley bolt could loosen and break over time. If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem.

According to a report in The Detroit News, another 5,500 diesel-powered X5 SUVs in Canada are involved in the recall.

BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries associated with the issue. The company will notify owners in January 2013 and dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt for free. Meanwhile, those with questions or concerns can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7471 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
