Volkswagen is recalling 2,471 Beetle coupes due to a problem with the front passenger seat occupant control module. The affected vehicles are produced between February 2012 and August 2012.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "If the right front passenger seat in Beetles equipped with leather sport seats gets wet, the occupant control module may not properly detect the presence of a child restraint installed in the seat. In that case, the airbag will not turn off. If the airbag does not turn off, in the event of a crash necessitating front airbag deployment, a child secured in the child seat may be at increased risk for serious injury".
The German carmaker will notify owners and replace the control module free of charge, but a notification schedule has not been provided yet. For more information, owners can contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
