BMW M1 successor to be named M8

A new report from Automobile Magazine is indicating that BMW is planning to launch a M1 successor, which is inspired by the M1 Hommage concept that introduced at the 2008 Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance.

Designed to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, the model will actually be called the M8 instead of the iconic M1 name when it goes on sale in 2016. The new M8 could get on a modified version of the carbon fiber and aluminum architecture which underpins the i8 hybrid. This would enable the car to be significantly lighter.

Additional information is limited, but the supercar would reportedly be powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 600 hp, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
