German carmaker Audi is considering a Le Mans-inspired diesel hybrid supercar that would be slotted above the current R8.
"There is definitely room for a super sports car above the R8," Audi technical development chief Wolfgang Durheimer Wolfgang Durheimer told Auto Express. "If we made this a diesel hybrid it could be a hot-seller. What always sells is performance - if it is quick, has low consumption and looks cool, I’m sure it would be a success."
Audi insiders have suggested that this hypercar could be called R10 and feature some tech developed for the 2012 R18 e-tron Le Mans-winning race car. It is set to compete with the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and Ferrari Enzo replacement.
No details on the powertrain have been revealed, but the R10 could provide a combined power output in the region of 700 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in three seconds and hit a top speed of 322 km/h.
