Volkswagen developing two new crossovers

In a recent interview with Automotive News, Volkswagen spokesman Peter Thul has confirmed the company is developing two new crossovers.

One of the new models will be bigger than the Tiguan and offer seating for up to seven people. It should appeal to American consumers who don’t want a minivan. This model might be based on the US-spec Passat and cost less than the Touareg.

Meanwhile, the other crossover will be smaller than the Tiguan. It is based on the Polo and will use the new MQB platform. This crossover is slated be launched in 2014 and its styling will be inspired by the Cross Coupe Concept. Both front- and all-wheel drive options are expected.

Previous reports have indicated that the Polo-based crossover will compete with the Nissan Juke, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008, Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Renault Clio based crossover
