The VDS GT 001, a Belgian supercar developed by Raphael van der Straeten, has been revealed last Thursday at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels, alongside its racing counterpart, the VDS GT 001-R.
Based on the Gillet Vertigo, the VDS GT 001 features a chassis made from nomex/carbon that allowed the engineers to keep the curb weight of the car at only 990 kg. The car you see in the pictures is a model for the moment.
Under the hood, the VDS GT 001 is powered by a Maserati-sourced 4.2-liter V8 engine which develops 480 hp and is mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox. No information about the performance, but production will be limited to only 22 units at a yet undisclosed price, each one on request and built personally for the customer.
The creator of the sports car, Raphael van der Straeten, is a descendant of Count Rodolphe van der Straten Ponthoz who built his own VDS 001 and campaigned it in Can-Am races at the beginning of the 1980′s. He has also been involved in racing for several years with a Mustang FR500 GT3.
Meanwhile, the racing version, the GT 001-R, will debut at the 24 Hours of Dubai in January 2013.
