According to Autoexpress, Mazda is currently working on a coupe version of the new Mazda6 to rival the Audi A5. And it’s likely to spawn a high-performance MPS model.
The coupe would act as a halo car for the brand and would be the third body style for the Mazda6, joining the wagon and the sedan.
When asked about a new 6 MPS, program manager Hiroshi Kajiyama said "there is a high potential for this, and it would be helpful to the brand". Currently, the most potent engine Mazda offers is a 173 hp 2.2-liter turbodiesel in the Sport. A MPS variant could use a tuned up version of that engine.
Expect the Mazda6 Coupe to hit the market some time in 2014, with the MPS following a few months later.
