General Motors has recently announced the Cadillac ELR will be built alongside the Volt at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in late 2013.
According to GM’s North American President Mark Reuss, the Detroit-Hamtramck facility will receive a new investment of $35 million to build the plug-in electric luxury coupe. It will be the first coupe built in the Hamtramck plant since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.
"The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology," said Mark Reuss on Tuesday. "People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design."
The ELR is based on the 2009 Converj Concept and will feature an electric propulsion system, combining a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit and a four-cylinder engine working as a generator to power the electric motor.
The production version of the Cadillac ELR will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next year.
