BMW to offer three-cylinder engine in the US

At the Paris Motor Show last week, BMW has announced plans to offer the three-cylinder engine for the cars sold in the United States.

According to a BMW source, the new three-cylinder engine will cross the Atlantic and is offered in the MINI models as well as the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid. For Europe, the German carmaker plans to use this engine in its new front-wheel drive UKL1 platform-based models in both hybrid and non-hybrid configurations.

This UKL1 platform has recently been used for the Concept Active Tourer that is powered by a three-cylinder 1.5-liter TwinTurbo engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. The total output is 188 hp and 200 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 8 seconds.
