Audi has consistently confirmed that the R8 e-tron would be offered to customers later this year and it recently set a lap record for production electric vehicles at the Nürburgring. However, Car & Driver is reporting that all work on the electric R8 has been halted.
The magazine also says the stoppage and subsequent review being conducted at the request of research and development chief Wolfgang Dürheimer. This means that a launch in early 2013 is not going to happen or could be axed altogether.
The reasons are numerous, but the most important obstacle seems to be the high cost of batteries. We’ll bring an update as soon as the German carmaker comments on the matter.
