Mazda has officially revealed the all-new 2013 Mazda6, ahead of its debut at the Moscow Motor Show on August 31.
Inspired by the Takeri concept, the mid-size sedan measures 4,865 mm long, 1,840 mm wide and 1,450 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,830 mm, which is 105 mm longer than previous Mazda6. The model has a "KODO - Soul of Motion" design language with a 'signature wing' grille and LED-infused headlights, along with bulging fenders and a sloping roofline.
According to chief designer Akira Tamatani, "We have created a design in which the wild and dynamic expressions of motion artistically realize a powerful presence. Simply looking at the car heightens one's expectations about the driving experience even before actually riding in it."
The interior comes with higher quality materials and a nicer design. The Japanese carmaker says it has used soft-touch materials on areas frequently touched by occupants, such as the doors and upper dash section. Notable highlights include a multifunction steering wheel, metallic accents and 5-inch colour satellite navigation screen. The cabin has a cargo capacity of 483-liter.
At least in Russia, two petrol engines are available. The SKYACTIV-G 2.0 produces 148 hp and 210 Nm of torque, while the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 develops 189 hp and 256 Nm of torque. Both engines have start/stop technology and the 2.5-liter engine is the brand’s first vehicle to feature new i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system that begins charging a capacitor the moment the driver takes his foot off the accelerator.
Under the skin, the car rides on a unibody platform which uses tensile steel which reduces weight and improves torsional rigidity by about 30 percent. It also has a front MacPherson strut / rear mutli-link suspension, new column-type electric power assistance for the steering system and improved brakes.
In terms of safety, the new 6 sedan gets some high-tech features, such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM), Adaptive Front Lighting (AFS) and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS).
The 2013 Mazda6 will compete with the Honda Accord and the Ford Fusion / Mondeo when it goes on sale later this year.
