U.S. Government’s Environmental Protection Agency has recently rated the front-wheel drive version of the 2013 Buick Encore at 25 mpg city / 33mpg highway / 28 mpg combined.

Based on 45 percent highway and 55 percent city driving, the EPA estimates annual fuel cost of $1,900. Meanwhile, fuel economy numbers for the all-wheel drive variants will be revealed a later date. Both are powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with 140 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

"Right from its inception, Encore was designed to offer customers the safety and comfort expected of any Buick, but with an added emphasis on space and fuel efficiency. We did things like specify one optimized wheel and tire package to ensure that every customer has the best driving experience possible", said Vehicle Chief Engineer Jim Danahy.

For comparison, the 2013 Ford Escape returns 23 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 26 mpg combined, while the Jeep Compass with an automatic transmission is rated at 23 mpg city / 28 mpg highway / 25 mpg combined.
