Designed to provide specifically for the German army with a multi-purpose vehicle which can handle a wide range of missions, the Light Multi-Purpose Vehicle (LMPV) features an off-road anti-blocking system and all-wheel drive. In an official press release, RMMV said "Outstanding mobility both on and off road, flexibility and reliability - these are the chief features of the lightweight all-terrain vehicles in service with armed forces around the globe. Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) has now expanded its product portfolio to include a commercial off-the-shelf vehicle in the below 3.5 t class".

Under the bonnet, the car is powered by a variety of petrol and diesel engines with outputs ranging from 121 hp to 177 hp. All engines can be mated to either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The Amarok M can tow up to 6,100 pounds with a NATO-spec tow bar and has a top speed of 111 mph.
