In a recent interview with Bimmerpost, BMW of North America CEO, Ludwig Willisch has confirmed that the next generation M3 and M4 will get an inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine with around 450 hp.
BimmerPost reports that "Mr. Willisch said a V6 configuration was previously considered (including whether a motor based on the current M3's S65 engine minus two cylinders was appropriate), but ultimately ruled out."
The new engine will replace the 4.0-liter V8 that resides in the current M3. It will have a displacement of around 3.0-liter twin-turbo or even tri-turbo and is expected to be mated to a dual-clutch transmission.
The new BMW M3 will debut in late 2013 or early 2014, followed a year later by the M4 Coupe.
