Toyota and TRD (Toyota Racing Development) have recently revealed the 2013 Camry NASCAR Racer, which is scheduled to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from next season, going against rivals like the Ford Fusion, Dodge Charger and the Chevrolet SS.
Based on the road-legal Camry, the race car looks to more closely resemble its production model. However, as is the case with stock cars, it features a tube frame chassis, a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.
"NASCAR and all four manufacturers were brought together to guide the direction of the new cars. We all worked together to put the 'S' back in NASCAR - we all wanted race cars that look more like our stock, production models - and together we accomplished that," commented Lee White, president and general manager of TRD.
Michael Waltrip Racing (a charter-member team when Toyota entered Sprint Cup racing in 2007), Joe Gibbs Racing (which gave the marque its first Cup Series victory when it switched from Chevy in 2008) and JTG Daugherty Racing are the teams reportedly confirmed to use the model in the racing series which begins at Daytona International Speedway in February.
