VW Cross Coupe TDI Plug-In Hybrid Concept headed to 2012 Geneva

VW Cross Coupe TDI Plug-In Hybrid Concept

Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce an updated version of their Cross Coupe Concept, which has been revealed in Tokyo last December, at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

According to the German carmaker, the all-wheel-drive crossover will feature a super frugal powertrain which has replaced the original gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain with an even more fuel efficient diesel-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain. The lastest Cross Coupe Concept now gets a 2.0-liter EA288 TDI engine and two electric motors.

The diesel engine offers up 295 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, while the two electric motors offer 133 lb-ft of torque up front and 199 lb-ft at the rear nearly instantaneously. The combined powertrain generates 306 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, allows the model to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in 6.5 seconds - faster than the gasoline/electric version - and hit a top speed of 220 km/h. VW says that the updated version returns an average 1.8-liter/km (155 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 46g/km.

More details will be unveiled in a couple of days time.
