Shelby American has recently announced the most powerful Shelby yet, named the 1000, will be introduced at the 2012 New York Auto Show on April 5.

Based on the 2012 Ford Shelby GT500, the special edition Mustang puts out a thumping 950 hp for the street-legal version and 1,100 hp for the track only version.

“Carroll Shelby is a visionary who has pushed the boundaries of performance his entire life. He challenged the Shelby American team to develop the Shelby 1000 and wanted to unveil this amazing new Shelby at the New York Auto Show celebrating 50 years since he unveiled the first Shelby Cobra that changed the face of high performance. We will have that very car, Cobra #1 along with Shelby 1000 on display in our Shelby American booth in New York”, said John Luft, president of Shelby American.

A limited production run of Shelby 1000s will be built. Both versions feature Ford’s 5.4 liter V8 engine with new connecting rods, pistons and crank, along with an upgraded exhaust system and a new supercharger.

The street legal version will start at $149,995, while the track version will cost $154,995. A price which doesn’t include the base GT500 ($200,000).
