Next-generation Volkswagen Passat coming in 2014

According to a new report from Auto Motor und Sport, the new generation Volkswagen Passat will be officially launched in 2014.

The source also says that the model will ride on the MQB platform as the redesigned Golf and Audi A3. This allows it to weigh approximately 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) - 40 kg less than the current version.

Under the hood, the next Passat will come with both diesel and petrol engines that will meet the strict Euro 6 emission standards. There's also word of a plug-in hybrid variant with a 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, allowing the model to produce 170 hp and can travel up to 50 km on electricity alone.
