Called the GT 86, the model will launch throughout Europe and Japan. It is the result of a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, which will present its own version of the sports car called the BRZ and the North American market Scion FR-S.
Under the hood, the 2+2 coupe is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with Toyota's D-4S direct injection technology that delivers 200 hp at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 6,600 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with a short-throw lever or an optional six-speed automatic transmission. The Subaru BRZ will be more powerful with a total of 300 hp.
The GT 86 measures 4,240 mm long, 1,285 mm high and 2,570 mm wide, which Toyota says make it the most compact four-seater sports car available in the market. The weight distribution is 53:47 (front-to-rear), make it safer for the enthusiastic driver.
The Toyota GT-86 will go on sale in the summer of 2012.
