Dangerous Toxins Within Automobiles

There are many beautiful cars out there and we rely on them very much. When it comes to automobiles, the vehicle exhaust is not the only thing that you have to be worried about. There are many other different types of toxins within many other parts of every vehicle on earth, and these are perhaps more dangerous because they are not well known. The most dangerous part of a vehicle is not the outside, but the inside. There are many more toxins on the interior of a vehicle, and those who are not properly educated on the types of toxins and their effects on the human body risk malicious exposure to conditions such as mesothelioma and other types of toxins based disease.

The following are some of the toxins that are inside the interior of a vehicle:

- Asbestos

Asbestos was one of the most potent threats in a vehicle, especially if the owner of the vehicle is a do-it-yourself type. Asbestos resides in many parts of the vehicle that the home maintenance person may be unknowingly exposing himself to. These parts include the clutch plates, the hood lining and even the brake pads. During the maintenance process, small, invisible pieces of asbestos can actually release themselves into the air.

- PBDEs

These are chemical compounds that are used as fire retardants. They can actually be found in the dust on the windshield of a vehicle. All drivers and passengers are at some risk of exposure to these dangerous compounds it the windshield has a lot of dust, and especially if the air vents in the car are open. These compound chemicals have been known to cause conditions such as liver toxicity, birth defects, premature birth and impaired learning. This means that pregnant women should be especially careful when dealing with dust around cars.

- Chlorine and bromide

These two chemicals are used on things like the interior knobs in the upholstery in a car. They are also fire retardants. However, exposure to chlorine can give thyroid problems, as high levels of bromine can affect the learning mechanisms in the body, especially in young children. Check over your car for these chemicals before putting your child in the car.

- Benzene

Benzene is a chemical that is also found in the upholstery of a vehicle. The World Health Organization tells us that even in the smallest amounts, it is very toxic and can cause stomach irritation, dizziness and vomiting. If the level of exposure to benzene is high enough, it can even be fatal. Also, benzene is often found on top of the dashboard of a vehicle. Make sure to clean your vehicle thoroughly and remove as much dust as you can from the dashboard. Wear a breathing mask while cleaning the interior of the car.
